Manchester Christmas Markets

It's that time of year to dig out your winter hat, wear your festive jumper and head out into the cold to explore the Christmas Markets! As a Mancunian, I'm used to seeing the markets pop up every year. However, I've begun to realise, not everyone has the luxury of having such fantastic Christmas Markets on their doorstep so I thought I would shed some light and give you all some tips and advice from a local's perspective.
The Christmas Markets have helped put Manchester on the map as a tourist destination (besides having 2 major football clubs) so it's no surprise really that so many people are visiting my home city in the North of England. Manchester is actually a small city, compared to the likes of London, which makes it so much easier to get around and it's easy to do most tourist activities in one day. Perfect if you are only in the area for a short amount of time!

Where are the markets?

In December, pretty much the whole of Manchester city centre transforms into one big Christmas market heaven. The stalls are spread across the city and are located in different areas, each with their own district character and atmosphere.

The main and busiest market is Albert Square which is where you see the gigantic Santa sat outside the Town Hall building. Other locations include: King Street, St Ann's Square, Exchange Square, Market Street and Cathedral Gardens. If you want the main markets and don't mind hustle and bustle, head to Albert Square but if you prefer a more quiet and relaxed atmosphere, I would recommend visiting Cathedral Gardens which isn't far from Victoria train station.

There is so much choice on offer at the markets from international food, drinks, gifts and crafts. My personal favourite when I visit is to buy a hot chocolate and add a liqueur such as Baileys or Malibu. The choices are endless and it's getting bigger and more varied every year.

Top Tip: If you buy a mulled wine or hot chocolate, they will charge you an extra £2.50 for the hire of the mug. You can choose to keep it as a souvenir or return it for a refund. They don't always tell you this- you can return the mug to any stall as they all rent the same mugs!

After a day at the Christmas Markets, don't forget to take a wonder around the shops if you have time and check out the Christmas decorations and lights that the department stores have at this time of year. My personal favourites this year are House of Fraser on Deansgate and Jack Wills on King Street which had amazing decorations.
